During a neurofeedback training session, a person can expect a relaxing experience focused on helping their brain naturally adjust to healthier patterns. Over time, these sessions help improve symptoms related to issues like anxiety, ADHD, sleep disorders, and more.

Let’s take a look at some specifics.

Neurofeedback Training Setup

Upon arrival, clinicians will place small EEG sensors on the scalp using a conductive gel. These sensors monitor brainwave activity in real-time but do not deliver any electrical signals to the brain.

The individual will be seated comfortably in a chair, usually in a quiet and relaxing environment to help them focus on the session.

Brainwave Monitoring

The sensors capture the brain’s electrical activity, which is displayed on a screen. This information provides immediate feedback on how the brain is functioning.

The neurofeedback system uses this data to guide a personalized feedback program, typically in the form of visual or auditory cues.

Feedback Process

The individual will watch a video, listen to music, or play a game that is connected to their brainwave activity. The video or sound adjusts in real time based on the brain’s activity—becoming clearer, louder, or more rewarding when the brain produces the desired brainwave patterns.

The system provides positive reinforcement whenever the brain generates the target brainwaves. For example, the video will play smoothly or a game will progress when the brain is in the desired state, encouraging the brain to continue producing those patterns.

“Passive” Participation

During the session, the individual doesn’t need to “do” anything consciously. They simply observe or interact with the feedback. The brain naturally learns to adjust and produce the preferred brainwave patterns over time.
