Just as people differ in how they think, concentrate, sleep, and respond to stress, patterns of brain activity can also vary from person to person. A brain map provides a way to measure and examine these patterns, giving neurofeedback practitioners information that may be useful when developing an individualized training plan.

Understanding why every brain map is different can also help explain why neurofeedback training is often customized rather than based on a single standard protocol. Let’s take a closer look.

What Is a Brain Map?

A brain map is commonly created using quantitative electroencephalography, or qEEG. During the process, sensors are placed on the scalp to measure electrical activity produced by the brain. The procedure is noninvasive, and the sensors record activity rather than sending electricity into the brain.

The recorded information can then be analyzed to examine different brainwave frequencies and how activity varies across areas of the brain.

Rather than providing a simple picture of whether the brain is “healthy” or “unhealthy,” a brain map offers information about patterns of brain activity at the time of testing.

Everyone Has Unique Brainwave Patterns

Brainwaves are commonly grouped into frequency ranges such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma. Each type of brainwave is associated with different states and functions, although brain activity is much more complex than any single frequency.

The amount, location, and relationship of these frequencies can differ between individuals. Two people experiencing similar concerns may therefore have different patterns on their brain maps.

For example, two people who both report difficulty concentrating may not necessarily display identical brain activity. This is one reason an individualized assessment can be useful before beginning neurofeedback training.

Age Can Influence Brain Activity

Brain activity changes throughout life. The developing brain of a child or teenager is different from the brain of a middle-aged or older adult.

Because normal brainwave patterns can vary with age, brain map information is generally interpreted within the appropriate context. Age-related differences are an important consideration when examining whether certain patterns appear unusual compared with expected activity.

Sleep, Stress, and Daily Factors Matter

The brain does not operate exactly the same way every day. Sleep quality, fatigue, stress, medications, caffeine, and other factors may influence brain activity.

For this reason, practitioners may provide instructions before a brain mapping session to help obtain useful data. They may also ask questions about sleep, medications, or other circumstances that could affect the results.

Symptoms Do Not Always Tell the Whole Story

People can experience similar symptoms for different reasons. Trouble focusing, poor sleep, mental fatigue, or difficulty regulating emotions can potentially be associated with a variety of brain activity patterns.

A brain map provides another source of information that can be considered alongside a person’s symptoms, history, and goals. It is not intended to replace a medical diagnosis or comprehensive clinical evaluation.

Brain Maps Can Help Personalize Neurofeedback Training

The differences between brain maps are one reason personalization is important in neurofeedback training. Instead of assuming that everyone with a particular concern should receive identical training, practitioners can use brain activity data and other assessment information to identify potential training targets.

Progress can then be monitored as training continues, and protocols may be adjusted based on how the individual responds. Every brain is different, and brain mapping can help make those individual patterns more visible.
